Tracking of seafood freshness via mobile phone in Norway

norwegian seafood association
This is one of the most interesting usages of mobile phones I have ever heard as Norwegians will soon be able to use their mobile phones to track the freshness of their seafood.

Norway based Food chain coop, called Norwegian Seafood Association has developed the system, which will track when and where the fish was caught with the use of mobile phones. With the system, Norwegians would be able to scan the bar code on the packing and send the code afterward. Then the system will transmit the code to a database, which will send back information where the fish was caught or where it was packaged and the expiry date of packaging. Local firm TraceTracker has developed the software for the system.

In Norway, fishing is one of the major industries. Norway exports fish to Russia and other Europeans market. According to report, its export of fish is about $5.37 billion in the first 10 months of 2007.
