Nokia Lumia City Lens App brings augmented reality to your fingertips

Augmented Reality (or Virtual Reality) has become quite the buzzword right now. With all the sci-fi movies with their exceptional special effects showing off HUDs and visors with detailed displays of everything around the user, people everywhere are just restless to jump up on this bandwagon. Be it the J.A.R.V.I.S. from Ironman or the new prototype of Google Glasses from Google, AR is set to open a whole new vista in the future.

This is where Nokia comes in. The people at Nokia labs have come up with an exclusive “Lumia only” app called “City lens”. It is up on Nokia labs for download. There is a version on the Ovi store for symbian phones as well, but this brand new beta has a bigger kick.

The City Lens App

Open the app, point it a city scene after a heartbeat, info on all places of significance appear. It is very much like an augmented reality browser, but polished in that sober Nokia finish. The camera viewfinder becomes an information window. Scan the city scene with your camera and the app displays information in the form of tags. Tap the tag to find information related to any landmark. The app also has an option to share this information over their social networks. It’s a beta so anticipate trivial errors to occur. It has all the capabilities of Symbian version and a couple of extra features as well. With City Lens, users can experience the world around them in whole new light. Launch City Lens and watch surrounding points of interests come alive with information.

City Lens allows you to:

  1. Locate nearby places of interests: whether through a camera viewfinder view, map view or list view.
  2. Get more information about a destination.
  3. Expediently share information on you location with friends directly from the app.
  4. Save recent queries for future reference.
