Everything you should know about the Universal cellphone charger

Universal Cellphone Charger

We all know how inconvenient it is, when we have to search our drawers for the right charger for our cell phones, in a situation where every member in our family is using a cell phone of a different manufacturer, and hence each of those cell phones have different chargers. But, this irritation will certainly end with the introduction of the Universal cellphone charger.

Salient Features

Today, whenever a user buys a new cellphone, he needs to replace his old charger with the one he has got with the new cellphone. Even if the old charger is in a good working condition, the user has no other option than to dump his old chargers. In 2009, The U.N. telecom agency approved the technology for a universal cellphone charger, which will eliminate the need to have different chargers for cell phones of different manufacturers.

All the leading cellphone manufacturers of the world including Nokia, Motorola, LG, etc. have agreed to come together on this common platform for manufacturing a common charging interface on their cellphones which will have a Micro-USB connector as the charging pin. Also, the leading service providers like Orange, Vodafone, AT&T have agreed to follow a common standard that will support a Universal cellphone charger. Motorola’s existing Micro-USB connector is the standard for the Universal cellphone charger. The Universal cellphone charger is expected to hit the markets by 2012.

Pros

The Universal cellphone charger will not only make life easier for cellphone users but, it will also help the environment. It is expected that the use of Universal cellphone charger will significantly reduce the green house gases emitted in manufacturing of the existing cellphone chargers.

Also, the Universal cellphone charger will reduce the energy consumption by about 50 percent. Where every time the users buy a new cellphone, they have to dump their existing charger, even if it is in good condition. The Universal cellphone charger, however, will eliminate the need of dumping existing chargers. This will also result in reduction in environmental wastes due to unnecessary dumping of chargers in good condition.

Another benefit of this new introduction in the world of mobile devices is that these chargers will be cross-functional. It means that a charger bought with a cellphone of one manufacturer, will also support a cellphone bought from another manufacturer. So, next time if you forget your charger at home or at office, then you need not worry because you can easily use chargers available with other people around you.

Cons

Aside from the pros enumerated above, the universal charger will sure render cell phone providers to lose their competitive approach. Since the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will be responsible for marketing the universal charger worldwide, the cell phone companies will stand defeated as their profits from selling their own chargers will suffer a sure setback. Therefore, maybe, the cellphone prices would go up to compensate the dip in profits.

Verdict

One point that needs to be highlighted is still unclear whether Apple will be a part of this new revolution or not. In either situation, this technology will definitely be highly supported by most of the cellphone users in the world. Also, a good news in this respect is that one of Europe’s largest digital tech organization has already delivered the first sample of the Universal cellphone charger to the European Commission. Now, we just need to wait and watch what new revolutions are brought into the technology industry, when the Universal cellphone charger hits the market.
