StarHub, Singapore’s second-largest telecom that offers mobile and cable network services in the country, has launched ‘Home Zone,’ the world’s first commercial 3G femtocell service. The newly introduced service allows StarHub 3G post paid subscribers to make free local voice calls, video calls and send SMS as long as they are in the range of their home base station. Each Home Zone, which supports all 3G mobile usage, allows the user to make free outgoing local voice/video calls and SMS. MMS, downloads, surfing and other GPRS activities will be charged at standard published rates.
In addition, the service comes with a decent add-on called ‘Whitelist’ which is the list of StarHub post-paid mobile numbers, nominated by Home Zone owner to enjoy the free outgoing calls made in the Home Zone area, i.e. up to four StarHub 3G mobile users can make calls at the same time over a single ‘Home Zone’ connection, allowing all the users to reap the same benefits.
