DoT enforces law to specify radiation levels on cellphones

New strict guidelines from Department of Telecom demands every cellphone and mobile tower to specify the radiation amount emitted. Now when you go to a retail store you will see the radiation level specified on the handsets. This rule should come into action from 1st September.

Radiation level on phones

This law is applicable on all mobile phones and mobile phone towers. DoT has also set an April deadline. This rule was finalized last year in November. Every mobile device emits certain amount of radiation which is measured in Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). This number signifies how much radiation is absorbed by the human body. The maximum allowed absorption rate has been capped at 1.6 W/kg while the standards in Europe are 2.0 W/kg. The absorption level accepted in India for mobile towers would now shrink to one tenth value.

Tower companies will now certify themselves and display the value. So now when you buy a cellphone, you will have the SAR value written on the handset, the box, the manual and the official website. Also, these values will be prominent enough to notice without effort. This would make the rates of mobiles go high by Rs. 400.
