Now airbags for smartphones!

Amazon patents airbags for smartphones

Retail giant Amazon is not usually known to promote fads that look like they were imported straight from Japan. But the company has recently filed a patent for a new anti-drop device for smartphones that involves the use of airbags. The technology that has previously been used to prevent injuries to drivers and passenger in cars is now going to be used to make smartphones impact proof when dropped.

Airbags for smartphones

Smartphones, especially those that use touchscreen displays are prone to experiencing crashes and malfunctions when dropped which makes them decidedly less sturdy and impact resistant than cellphones of yore. To avoid malfunctions and severe defects from ruining your precious and expensive smartphone, Amazon is prepping a new protective system for phones that uses an airbag as well as gas filled CO2 cartridges that can inflate these airbags almost as soon as a drop is sensed to minimizing the damage.

According to the patent, the airbag system will also come with a feature that will allow the phone to reorient itself to always land on the airbag. Of course this protective covering will also need to be synced with the software of the phone itself to ensure that its fall sensing mechanisms are always working perfectly.

The patent awarded to the company also states that the protection method will also be smart enough to access if the impact and risk of damage from the fall is greater than the threshold of the smartphone itself so it would be able to tell the difference when a relatively small fall occurs in which case the airbags won’t be deployed! Sounds a little too complicated for smartphones that freeze after a few months of use. Besides, anyone who is prone to dropping their smartphone would probably want these airbags to deploy on every spill and not just when the phone is dropped a few storeys down!
