Fraudsters have so far been successful in cracking passwords and stealing personal data but life for them would become difficult if Background Draw-a-Secret (BDAS) technology, the software developed by the Newcastle University researchers finds its way to our cell phones and computers. With touchscreen becoming a common feature on most cell phones and personal digital assistants, we could draw images on the displays of our devices. The Newcastle University researchers have cashed on this feature of our smartphones to replace the alphanumeric characters with hand drawn images as passwords.

These graphical passwords are drawn by joining dots over a backdrop of a picture of a flower or a map or a playing card or the night sky. The number of pen strokes used and the order of the drawing – where it started and where it ended are stored in the memory of the computer and functions as your password. While graphic passwords might be difficult to crack but despite of the claims made, for the user to remember it is no less difficult, at least I cannot remember the lines of my drawing precisely.
