Each day new and improved features are added to mobile phones, but sometimes manufacturers forget about the portability factor like in case of N95.

Well, Sony Ericsson really wants to do something about it and their newly filed patent shows us just how. Their new patent application is known as “Detachable Housings for a Wireless Communication Device” and as the name suggests, they are planning for a mobile phone which will consist of two different detachable parts. This patent application shows that how portability can be maintained by creating phones with detachable parts. Image shows a clamshell phone in which screen can be removed from the main unit. This converts mobile phone into two different parts, display unit and input unit.

This will allow mobile phones to be a lot more customizable, feature rich and yet portable. You can always detach that sleek display unit and slip it into your pocket and keep other bulky part in some bag of yours. As per the patent, both units will communicate with each other using some range communication module, just like Bluetooth.

Sony Ericsson’s patent is not only restricted to clamshell phone but Sony also wants patent for using such technology on slider and ones with rotating screen.
