Ericsson AB of Sweden has already envisioned mobile phones of the future that can shoot Full HD video with a XGA resolution display screen. They seem to be on the right track as they have announced a new image sensor “Exmor” that could deliver up to 12.25-megapixel resolution. This new image sensor is mere 7.5 millimeters diagonally. They also have plans to roll out two other sensors, a 5.76-mm CMOS image sensor with 8.11-megapixel resolution and a 4.5-mm sensor with 5.15-megapixel resolution. They are claiming the new image sensors to deliver high-quality images. Furthermore, Sony announced to produce compact lenses, so that the cameras could be easily integrated with phones of the future.
The race for development of high-end cameraphones is on the rise and Sony certainly wants to steal the show. I won’t be surprised if Sony Ericsson launches a 12-megapixel cameraphone sometime in the middle of 2009.
