As of now, CCDs are in fashion in all UV-to-infrared applications; it’s a must-have for astronomers. In so far as digital cameras are concerned, the CCD technology still have miles to go to surpass the conventional CMOS chips. Well, Sharp senses the urgency and takes the initiative to announce a new 1/2.3 type 12Mpx CCD [JP] for compact digital cameras. Jan 31st may see the sample CCDs roll out, hopefully, for $45 only. Sharp says that mass production is still a while away. It expects to produce and vend 300,000 units of CCDs/month this March onwards.
