MWC 2012: Sony unveils Xperia P and Xperia U smartphones

Sony has announced two new handsets under Xperia NXT series: Xperia P and Xperia U, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2012, Barcelona. Xperia NXT (Next Generation Series) handsets are the first to debut under Sony Mobile Communications after Sony bought Ericsson. These phones will be available across the globe in the second quarter of this year.

Xperia P and U

Both Xperia U and Xperia P offer a Reality Display, powered by Mobile BRAVIA display engine. They come with 1GHz dual-core processor and run on a skinned version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Apart from that, both Android handsets feature “Transparent Element” that encircles base of the phone and incorporates invisible antenna components. This transparent element illuminates while receiving calls, messages or any other notifications. In both the phones, there will be a new user interface, which will allow consumers to access the applications directly from the lock screen.

Xperia P comes with aluminum unibody design that will be available in three finishes. The phone features 8 MP rear camera with HD video capture, front VGA camera, 16 GB storage, 1GB RAM, NFC (Near Field Communication), and HSPA as well as HDMI connectivity. It packs a 4-inch 960×540 display with Sony’s White Magic tech that provides a power efficient and ultra bright screen, easy to view in sunlight.

The phone comes with Smart Dock that allows the user to connect it with multiple screens making it an entertainment hub. Using a remote control, users can navigate the media content of phone to watch videos and other contents on TV screen. With given USB port in the Smart Dock, users can also attach a wireless keyboard and mouse to browse Internet, write emails and watch videos on their TV.

Moving on to the second handset on the chart, the Xperia U has a 3.5-inch 854×480 touch screen and 5MP rear camera with unique fast capture technology, HD recording and ability to capture 2D as well as 3D panoramic images. The phone has a front VGA camera, 512MB RAM, 8 GB storage and HSPA connectivity. It comes with 3D surround sound audio technology and xLoud that provides loud as well as crisp sound.

If you’re still looking for more, then you can stream your music on any wireless speakers through DLNA. This phone will be available in black and white with a choice of pink or yellow exchangeable caps. Xperia U will come with an advanced Smart Headset featuring Smart Key application. According to Sony, the handset will provide a talk time of six and a half hours.

That was the latest additions to the Xperia line up. It was a surprise that both of these devices are not coming with ICS, but Sony has promised an update the second quarter of 2012. Right now, the company does not confirm the pricing details for any of the handsets. If we get further report on these phones, we will bring it to you.
