Though fuel cells are touted to replace lithium ion batteries in most of our electronic gadgets, Sony is trying to take things further by mating a miniature fuel cell to a lithium ion battery. This hybrid battery technology will use methanol to produce electricity through the miniature fuel cell. This electricity will in turn be stored into the lithium battery which will serve as the primary source of power for your mobile phone. Stunningly, this system has enough juice to stream fourteen hours of video onto a mobile phone. That said, you can safely expect this battery technology to provide some excellent talk and standby times.

The downside to this 5×3 centimeter hybrid battery system is that it will be significantly larger than current batteries. This means that mobile phone manufacturers will have to package their mobile phones innovatively to accommodate this hybrid battery system. With this hybrid system, battery technology might finally catch up with the ever changing mobile phones that demand more and more power for their cutting edge applications.
