There is some extremely heartening news for BlackBerry users. The trend-setting brand has been declared the leader of the smartphone pack, in terms of unit sales. We were witness to a deluge of smartphone releases last year and some of us believed that BlackBerry would now struggle to hold on to its ‘leader’ tag. Figures suggest otherwise. Around 1 billion mobile phones were sold last year, out of which 14 million (1.4%) were BlackBerrys (RIM research findings). One must note that the number factors in all segments of mobile telephony. Nokia continues to lead the group with 40% of the total sales, but clearly BlackBerry leaves every brand behind in smartphone sales. The smartphone market is growing at a frenetic pace of 50% and BlackBerry lovers would certainly hope that they retain the No.1 position.
