The British supermarket chain, Asda, is all set to sell fifty thousand mobile phones for a measly £5 each. You have an option of four mobile phones that comprises of the Nokia 1112, Sagem My212x, Sagem My220x and Sagem My150x. And once you buy these mobile phones, all you have got to do is, get connected to a service provider and pay-as-you-go. Though this sounds pretty good with Asda even promising no hidden charges, I am pretty sceptical because I don’t understand why Asda wants to launch a mobile phone in the U.K which already has hundred percent mobile penetration. I beleive this strategy will only increase pollution as more people use and discard these dirt cheap mobile phones, which also are non-biodegradable. In my opinion, selling such mobile phones in poor African countries makes a lot of sense as the mobile phone penetration is in abysmal single digits and such low cost mobile phones will only help mobile telephony develop, not to mention the fact that mobile operators could also get a foothold in emerging economies. Meanwhile, these low cost mobile phones go on sale from today morning and only the coming days will tell how successful this scheme really is.
