42Mbps iPhone looks real, but only in 2011

This could very well be the biggest tech hoax of the year. A Telstra executive in Australia has been quoted or maybe misquoted as saying that the 3G iPhone will have broadband speeds of up to 42Mbps. This Moore’s law defying statement is having more than a few unwitting people believing this outrageous announcement. First of all the iPhone’s Infineon S-Gold3 Multimode Chipset maxes out at a data speed of 7.2Mbps. Secondly, all Telstra’s 3G network too supports data speeds of only upto 14.4Mbps. These two very important factors make the claim absolute gibberish, at least in the near future. Having said that, such insanely quick speeds are certainly possible, but we need to wait till 2011. That is because 2011 will see mobile networks across the world embracing 4G mobile network technology. Until then, 42Mbps on an iPhone, will in all probability, remain a pipe dream.
