Nokia launches bread and butter phones

nokia announces new phones just basic

Though Cellphone makers are constantly launching the most advanced phones showcasing new technology, trying to outdo each other, it is the bread and butter segment, or in other words the phones which sell in millions which brings money to the table. The flashy high end ones are nice but often are stratospherically priced, and sell in limited numbers and thus do not contribute much to the handset makers’ bottomlines.

The CeBIT fair in Germany, saw the Nokia 6650 and the Nokia 6214 Classic being launched. These mobiles, are all set to be bundled exclusively with T-mobile and Vodafone respectively and will in all probability, sell in huge numbers. The Nokia 6650, set to come with the T-mobile is a Flip phone and looks similar to the older 6260. The 6650 features a 2.2 inch TFT-QVGA screen and a 2 megapixel camera with flash. Internal memory is limited to 30mb with a micro sd slot expandable to 4gb. FM radio is included and the phone supports high speed data transfer and browsing with HSDPA, the handset also offers GPS services.

The other phone being launched is the Vodafone bundled, candybar styled Nokia 6214 classic. Feature wise it is identical to the 6650 with the main differences being the availability of 3G connectivity which offers high speed broadband on this phone. Memory expandability is upto a 8GB.

Both phones are based on the S60 platform which means they can take advantage of the new collaboration between Nokia and Microsoft and the products which come out of this alliance. The 6650 will be available on T-mobile by the third quarter of this year and the 6214 will debut a bit earlier in the second quarter.
