One of the largest mobile manufacturers in India, Micromax has been climbing the popularity chart rapidly since it entered the Indian mobile market in March 2008. Releasing a number of handsets after targeting specific needs of the users is the reason behind the growth of this company. They understand the needs of the local market and that is why they are also included in the top five mobile brands in India. One of the latest arrivals from Micromax is M2, which is promoted by the company as a ‘great music player which is also a phone. We agree on the same and concisely, we can say that M2 is a dual SIM handset with music as its priority.
With built in Yamaha audio amplifier and SRS WOW HD, the phone gives you an ultimate audio experience. It is one of the best entertainment handsets available in the market. Tactile feedback and responses from the keypad is good while the touch wheel’s multimedia buttons feel hard on the fingers, especially the fast forward and rewind keys. Talking about the positive side of the touch wheel-it is very responsive. To access the menu icons on the right, you have to perform a clock wise swipe on the wheel while the anti clock wise swipe does the opposite. Overall, the touch wheel gives a quick and easy way to navigate through the music library. If you do not like the swipe feature of the touch wheel, then you can use the multimedia buttons present on it. Apart from that, the dome headset amplifies the music and leaves no stone unturned to make your heart pound in every beat.
The handset boasts a TFT display with 240X320-pixel resolution and 2-megapixel camera with video recording facility. The music player of the phone comes with inbuilt Yamaha audio amplifier and SRS WOW HD for enhanced music experience. Apart from the audio player, the phone also comes with a video player and FM radio with recording feature.
With an 850-mAh battery, it gives you a talk time of 4.5 hours and music playback time of 8 hours. SIM cards in the phone are hot swappable; to insert the cards, you have to open the flaps and pull the trays out. There is no need to remove the battery every time you have to insert or remove any of the SIM cards.
M2 is a lightweight device having dimensions of 44.8X113X10.8mm and looks almost like a portable music player, especially due to its front click wheel. The matte grey finish on its body blends perfectly with the black finish on the battery covers. It has a unibody design made out of metal that adds elegance and durability. You will not find a separate keypad because all the keys are physically etched on the front panel of the phone. After looking at the phone, you would like to congratulate the designer who succeeds in keeping things simple, sharp and stylish. Overall, it has a superb design and we liked that very much. Curvy design of M2 allows you to hold it comfortably in your hands, but its shiny surface sometimes create problem while using and there are chances that you may drop it. Dropping is not a problem here because its sturdy built can survive few boot stomps.
Due to the unibody design, both the SIM card slots are located on the top protected by rubber caps that leaves no space for dust. Battery compartment is towards the lower end of the phone, which also houses the antenna.
In Indian market, the phone is available at a price of Rs. 2, 177. You can choose the phone in two colors-grey or bright orange.
M2 has the capability to replace portable music player and may be your mobile as well, but this is only possible if you like its stylish design. However, if you are a true music lover and store too many songs in your music player, then M2 cannot even replace your player because it lacks external memory card slot and the internal memory is restricted to 2GB. Apart from that, the player’s interface is not attractive and the phone dedicated volume keys are not present. Overall, we can recommend M2 because its music, design, overall performance and features can easily justify its budget friendly price.
