To expand the scale of innovation, developers cannot afford to live in cocooned existence. The major players of the mobile phone industry had realized the multiple disadvantages of closed operating systems and this is the reason they came together to form the LiMo foundation in January 2007. The foundation is dedicated to the development of the truly open, hardware-independent, Linux-based operating system for mobile devices. That the LiMo system is helping innovations has become evident as seven new handsets based on the LiMo Platform from Motorola, NEC and Panasonic Mobile Communications have been launched taking up the number of LiMo handsets to 21.

The seven new LiMo handsets are:
• Motozine ZN5 from Motorola is a high quality camera phone
• Foma N906i, Foma N906iu, Foma N906iL, Foma N706i from NEC
• Foma P906i and Foma P706iu from Panasonic

The latest LiMo handsets have all the latest high-end features including 3G, HSDPA, GPS, mobile TV, advanced video, secure payment and advanced mailing capabilities.
