Google trying to out-iPhone the iPhone

I guess you can call it ‘doing an Apple’ and Google’s offer to make its Android OS support third-party application installation just like the iPhone does stink of a copycat. Using what is being called Android Market, the Google-specific online marketplace is expected to let you search, purchase, download, and rate applications like ringtone editor, a voice-activated compass, and barcode scanner etc. Given that we already expect the company to make regular Google apps like Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Google Reader available to users anyway, this new innovation seems, at least at this point, more like an effort to not let the iPhone “win” on any count than a consideration for their customers!
